After looking through my results I gathered from my questionnaire, I have gathered many things about my target audience. From group with an almost equal balance of male and female participants with varying ages, I have over half of those asked described themselves as individuals, while just under one half described themselves as "mainstreamers." We can assume that my target audience consider themselves all different from one another, which is something to keep in mind when developing my trailer. Most considered themselves to be within a subculture too, however three fifths described themselves as "other" rather than a concrete subculture.
We can see from these set of results, that half of our audience consider themselves normal mainstreamers, while half either consider themselves individual or aren't particularly sure. This is important for understanding our target demographic and finding a specific target audience.
When asked about their favourite genre, the most popular choice was horror, however many other genres were taken as well, so only a small portion of the overall group think horror is their favourite genre. When asked if they like horror, two thirds said they do, which means that the overall group like the horror genre. They gave the names of their favourite horrors; some were paranormal/ ghost stories, some were psychological horrors and one person chose a zombie horror.
From these results we can see that many people do like horror movies, but few consider it their favourite genre. We could either stick with what we've got and have a niche, but loyal, fanbase or try and get the biggest audience possible and try to cater to those who aren't particularly big horror fans as well. Those who do seem to like paranormal and psychological horror sub-genres, both of which has a theme of mystery and discovery about them, as well as fear and claustrophobia, so when developing our trailer, we need to make sure it tries to aim for these themes.
When talking about how often they go to see the cinema, two thirds go to the cinema at least once a month. When asked about how often they see horror films at the cinema, one half didn't go and see horror movies at the cinema, while one quarter of the group see horror films at least once a month while the other quarter see horror films every few months at the cinema. When asked about how often they see films at home, there were a lot more people who said they see films every month and every week, while no-one said they watch a movie at home every few months. When asked how often they watched horror movies at home, there was a bigger increase, so much so that even one person who doesn't like horror movies watches one at least one every few months. Most people say they watch a horror film at least once a month.
Through these set of results, we can see that many people go to the cinema to see films, but slightly fewer go to see horrors at the cinema with longer time spans between each visit. However, people usually watch movies at home more than at the cinema, and even some people who don't like horror are more likely to watch it at home than they are to go out and see it at a cinema. So during creation of our trailer we need to seriously consider giving it a straight-to-DVD release or whether it should be given a theatrical release.
When talking about movies and horror movies, one reoccurring answer is that people like a good story in their movie. When asked what appeals to you in a movie, the majority of the group answered engaging story, and when asked what do they like about horror trailers, one of the most popular answers was that they don't give away too much. When talking about what they dislike in horror films, half of the group said that the most annoying thing is when they give away most of the plot points in the trailer. Another reoccurring answer is that people like suspense and atmosphere in horror films. When asked what they like most about horror, the majority of the group answered "suspense and atmosphere," while when asked what they like most about horror trailers, the most popular opinion was when they gradually build up suspense and give it atmostpheric beginning but a climatic ending. There were other things that people didn't like to see in horror trailers. Firstly, people didn't like using sex to advertise their film. They didn't like the idea that sex appeal had to be used to make people want to see the film. Secondly, people didn't like it when they give away too much about the villain; they want to fear him and get a pay off when they see the film, not have his image and method of killing spoiled when watching the trailer. They also didn't like the cliche; stereotypes were not welcome, such as the depressing goth and the bimbo cheerleader. They like unique characters with a realistic personality. They also didn't like generic voice overs, which make the trailer sound too cheesy.
From these last results, I can see what we need to do to make a successful trailer. Firstly, we must make sure it builds in suspense, that way it starts atmospheric and ends on a scary, suspenseful note. It must also focus on story more than gore, but not so much it gives away the major plot points. We need unique characters, that way people will be more likely to believe them rather than generic cut-out characters. Lastly, we don't want to spoil the enemy's identity too much. We have to keep his identity a secure secret until people see the film, but also give them an idea of what he's like through vague descriptions to keep people interested. If he's given too much of a spot light, he immediately becomes boring; fear comes from the unknown, and the more we know about the monster, the less we fear them.
